The Saudi delegation chaired by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Saud Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), participated in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2024, held in Geneva, Switzerland, until June 14th. The participation aims to enhance international cooperation for the development of the ICT sector, support the ITU's activities and harness the specialized human resources, in addition to supporting member states in the Union, especially the developing countries.
With the presence of the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen Majid Bin Khotheil, H.E. Al-Tamimi delivered the Kingdom’s speech at the council, clarifying the contributions made by Saudi Arabia in formulating policies and regulations that enhance collaboration in international efforts, as well as its role in developing new regulations and standards for a sustainable improvement in the telecom sector’s performance and quality. H.E. Al-Tamimi also highlighted the Kingdom’s support to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by enhancing access to ICT services in remote and unconnected areas, in addition to improving education and healthcare services through boosting digitalization.
The ITU Council consists of 48 elected member states, including Saudi Arabia, out of 193 member states in the Union. The Council acts as the Union’s governing body in the interval between Plenipotentiary Conferences. It ensures that the Union’s activities, policies and strategies fully respond to the rapidly evolving telecom sector, in addition to coordinating work programmes, approving budgets and controlling finances and expenditure.
